Le scale antincendio sono uno dei simboli di New York: camminando tra le vie di Manhattan è impossibile non notare queste immancabili costruzioni a ridosso dei grandi palazzi divenute ormai un tratto distintivo del paesaggio metropolitano. Le prime scale antincendio vennero installate nei quartieri più popolosi e popolari per far si che, in caso di fiamme, chi abitava nei piani superiori avesse la possibilità di potersi mettere in salvo. Le scale antincendio esterne ai palazzi cessarono di essere obbligatorie col regolamento edilizio del 1968 e sono sempre più un oggetto del passato anche se pare che ancora oggi ne esistano in città più di duecentomila. Costruite in metallo (ferro battuto) si presentano normalmente di colore grigio scuro anche se ad Harlem ed in altre zone periferiche della città non è raro vederne di colori anche molto accesi. Questa mia interpretazione, che spero essere un pò diversa dal "solito", è stata realizzata proprio ad Harlem.
