Classificato come Patrimonio dell'Umanità dall'Unesco, il Pont du Gard è l'acquedotto romano meglio conservato d'Europa, costruito nel primo secolo per fornire acqua alla città di Nimes. Gli antichi ingegneri progettarono un susseguirsi di ponti e gallerie dalla sorgente dell'Eure, vicino a Uzès, fino a Nîmes. Ogni giorno 35.000 m3 di acqua potabile veniva trasportata non solo agli abitanti della città, ma anche alle sue terme, fontane e giardini. Alto 50 metri e costruito su tre livelli, oggi è il ponte acquedotto più alto del mondo. È un vero e proprio simbolo del genio scientifico romano: lungo in origine 52 chilometri, il suo dislivello totale è di soli 17 metri. I costruttori dell'epoca dovettero mostrare grande ingegno per progettare, attraverso i paesaggi della macchia, i ponti e le gallerie per raggiungere Nîmes.
