La chiesa di San Giovanni Battista di Matera è uno dei migliori esempi di romanico pugliese presenti in città, ma è anche una delle più belle chiese materane. Venne ultimata nel 1233, per accogliere le penitenti agostiniane di Accon, le quali poi l'abbandonarono intorno alla fine del Quattrocento. L'attuale nome si deve a Monsignor Del Ryos, che la riaprì al culto nel 1695. Già durante il Medioevo la chiesa si imponeva come tesoro architettonico per l'eleganza strutturale e la raffinata decorazione. Un particolare, questo, che si evince dal portale finemente intagliato con volute vegetali e motivi di testine scolpite e sormontato da una piccola nicchia che ospita una statua in pietra policroma rappresentante San Giovanni Battista.
