Il santuario è situato a 2656 metri di altitudine, a circa tre ore di cammino a piedi da Lignan. Accanto è edificato il rifugio Oratorio di Cuney. È posto in mezzo alle rocce, ai piedi della Becca del Merlo. Cunéy è il più alto santuario d'Europa. Prima della sua costruzione il luogo era frequentato per la presenza di una sorgente benedetta dove gli abitanti delle zone limitrofe vi si recavano per pregare nei periodi di grave siccità. La leggenda narra che alcuni pastori nei pressi della fonte trovarono una statua della Madonna, la portarono a Lignan, in paese per riporla nella chiesa parrocchiale, ma la statua ritornò miracolosamente nel luogo del ritrovamento. La si riportò giù in chiesa e dinuovo la statua ritornò a Cuney sul posto manifestando così il volere di vedere eretto lì un santuario a proprio nome. La statua che ad oggi si può vedere all'interno del santuario, è in legno intagliato dipinto e in parte dorato probabilmente risale alla fine secolo XVI.
