Monte Sant'Angelo è una cittadina pugliese della provincia di Foggia famosa per essere un'importante meta di pellegrinaggio. In particolare è il Santuario di San Michele Arcangelo ad aver richiamato negli anni papi, re, imperatori e migliaia di fedeli devoti all'Arcangelo Michele. Sebbene la cittadina abbia origini davvero antiche, la sua storia e il suo sviluppo sono legati proprio al culto micaelico. Da quando, infatti, attorno al VI secolo l'arcangelo Michele fece la sua apparizione in una grotta della città, Monte Sant'Angelo è rapidamente diventata meta di fedeli, grazie anche presenza di un prolungamento della Via Francigena. I longobardi, molto devoti all'Arcangelo Michele, resero la grotta la Grotta di Monte Sant'Angelo un monumento nazionale dandogli ancora più popolarità.
