Capitello di una consolle di metà ottocento.L' acanto era considerato simbolo di verginità, in quanto pianta spontanea che cresce in terra non coltivata. Nel Cristianesimo primitivo e poi in quello medievale era simbolo della Resurrezione. La mitologia greca narra che Acanto fosse una ninfa desiderata dal divino Apollo. Fino dall'epoca ellenistica fu utilizzato come fregio soprattutto nei capitelli corinzi ed in seguito anche dall' arte romana, bizantina, medievale e rinascimentale.
