Il podalirio appartiene alla famiglia Papilionidae. La sua colorazione caratteristica è di base gialla, seppur con fasce trasversali bruno-nerastre, che creano un particolare marchio a forma di V. Non sempre sono di base gialla: alcune varietà hanno il fondo bianco e le fasce sempre nere. Le ali le consentono una apertura alare di circa 6–8 cm. Le ali posteriori hanno delle macchie arancioni e azzurre, mentre la parte conclusiva delle code è molto allungata e di un colore bruno intenso.
