Fin dalla preistoria, il colle di San Giusto ospitò un castelliere che, in epoca romana, divenne sede di un importante centro urbano. La rocca, sorta in epoca medievale ad opera dei Veneziani, fu abbattuta nel XIV secolo per volere del patriarca di Aquileia e, soltanto nel 1470, fu riedificata da Federico II d'Asburgo; appartengono a questo periodo la torre quadrata e l'edificio di due piani, oggi sede del Museo Civico del Castello. Sotto il governo della Repubblica Veneta, nei primi anni del Cinquecento dominio il castello venne potenziato nelle difese e, con il ritorno della dominazione austriaca, i lavori proseguirono fino alla costruzione, nel 1630, dei grossi bastioni e delle mura di collegamento. Al complesso fortificato si accede da una rampa conclusa da un ponte levatoio in legno, gettato su un fossato di limitata larghezza; attraversato l'atrio, voltato a crociera, si raggiunge il Piazzale delle Milizie, dove scale e camminamenti scoperti conducono ai bastioni. Dal 1930 il castello è di proprietà del Comune, che lo ha attrezzato a scopo turistico e lo utilizza per manifestazioni culturali, spettacoli e mostre temporanee. Nel bastione Lalio del Castello di San Giusto, dal 2001, trova spazio il nuovo Lapidario Tergestino dove sono conservati e protetti dalle interperie tutti i reperti lapidei romani prima esposti nel giardino dell'Orto Lapidario. Il percorso lungo le mura di cinta offre una delle più belle viste panoramiche sulla città e sul golfo di Trieste. (da Turismo fgv/il castello di san Giusto)
