Non ho mai avuto un animale preferito, osservando e studiando tutte le loro particolarità ho imparato ad apprezzare ogni specie per le sue caratteristiche e per l'importante scopo che ha in natura. Anche tra i lepidotteri per me scegliere una singola specie è impossibile, non ci riesco, se scelgo una specie mi sento come se stessi tradendo tutte le altre. Ogni farfalla ha una sua particolarità: il colore e le forme delle ali, la metamorfosi e la particolare e sempre diversa vita da bruco. Non si può negare però che il macaone con i suoi colori accesi è una specie molto affascinante da osservare e anche da fotografare. Quando allevo alcune specie di lepidotteri, posiziono verticalmente all'interno dei fauna box qualche rametto per invogliare i bruchi a fare lì la crisalide. In questo modo poi posso prenderlo, posizionarlo sul treppiede e fotografare tutte le fasi della metamorfosi. Questa è senza dubbio la cosa più difficile perché i bruchi preferiscono sempre impuparsi sotto il coperchio del contenitore: devo posizionare i rametti quando sono ancora piccoli, in modo da fargli capire che sono stabili e adatti allo scopo. Questo esemplare è stato intelligente ed ha subito capito la sua utilità. Dopo 15 giorni alle 6 del mattino è nato questo bellissimo esemplare femmina, era inizio agosto e con le alte temperature la metamorfosi avviene molto rapidamente. La femmina si distingue dal maschio per le dimensioni leggermente maggiori e l'addome più grande e arrotondato. Ero in esplorazione da circa 14 ore, avevo portato con me il fauna box e avevo notato subito i segnali che anticipavano la nascita. La farfalla dopo essere uscita dalla crisalide rompendo la parte superiore, si è posizionata poco più su per distendere le ali. Il sole non era ancora apparso all'orizzonte e sono rimasto in attesa ad osservarla per più di un'ora fino a quando dal sottobosco è spuntata la delicata luce del primo mattino. C'era un vento costante e la farfalla aveva difficoltà a restare aggrappata, ho dovuto cambiare posizione 2 volte prima di poter fotografare, è stata un'operazione molto delicata, ho spostato tutta l'attrezzatura lentamente per non spaventarla. Alla fine sono riuscito a scattare alcune foto, sfruttando quella luce delicata e usando anche 2 flash per schiarire le ombre. Poi ho atteso il suo primo volo, che è avvenuto poco dopo quando il sole era quasi visibile in alto dietro agli alberi. Infine soddisfatto ho preparato gli zaini per tornare a casa, avevo a disposizione 6 ore per riorganizzarmi, prima di ricominciare l'esplorazione.
