Sono una Guida della Natura della Regione Piemonte e mi perdonerete se la mia voce sarà “fuori dal coro” ma lo Scoiattolo grigio (di certo molto confidente e quindi facilmente fotografabile) rappresenta una seria minaccia per le specie autoctone, in particolare per il “nostro” Scoiattolo rosso e per molte specie di uccelli.
Attualmente è stato classificato come “una tra le 100 specie invasive (Invasive Alien Species) peggiori e impattanti sulla biodiversità”.
E' infatti ampiamente dimostrato che lo Sciurus carolinensis entra in diretta competizione con il “rosso” per il cibo e grazie al fatto di essere più grande, aggressivo e prolifico, ne determina l'allontanamento e in molti casi la totale sparizione dagli habitat (soprattutto di pianura).
Uno studio commissionato nel Regno Unito ha poi rilevato che il grigio si ciba dei nidiacei di molti uccelli canori, predando e distruggendo migliaia di nidi in modo sistematico.
