Da Pro Loco Roma Capitale: La Via Appia Antica è la strada romana che collegava un tempo la città di Roma alla città di Brindisi, considerata durante l'antichità una città strategica poiché il suo porto collegava l'antica Roma all'Oriente. Veniva chiamata dai romani Regina Viarium, per la precisione con cui gli antichi ingegneri romani l'avevano costruita. Le grandi pietre levigate che formano la pavimentazione della strada, l'hanno resa percorribile anche in caso di pioggia o di condizioni climatiche avverse, assicurando la stabilità dei mezzi di trasporto a ruota dell'epoca. Via Appia Antica è l'unico luogo dove è ancora possibile ammirare i resti del lontano impero. Inizialmente collegava Roma alle colline di Albano. I lavori di ristrutturazione iniziarono nel 312 a.C, per volere del censore Appio Claudio Cieco e furono ultimati nel 190 a.C., quando la strada raggiunse Brindisi. Via Appia Antica era nota nel passato anche perché nel 71 a.C., in seguito alla ribellione dei 6000 schiavi guidati da Spartaco, quando questi vennero catturati, furono crocifissi lungo questa strada fino a Pompei. Sotto gli ordini degli imperatori Augusto, Vespasiano, Traiano e Adriano la strada fu nuovamente ampliata e ristrutturata, per poi essere abbandonata dopo la caduta dell'Impero romano. A questo momento di oblio della Via Appia Antica si alternano momenti di rinascita durante il periodo delle Crociate in Terra Santa, per non essere poi più considerata fino al Rinascimento. La strada è percorribile ancora oggi; per il primo tratto è costituita dai normali sampietrini, fino ad arrivare all'altezza della tomba di Cecilia Metella dove la strada è composta dai basoli che da qui in poi costituiscono il manto stradale di via Appia Antica. I massi di origine vulcanica derivano dalla storica “colata di Capo di Bove”, che dai Colli Albani arrivò fino a questo punto della Via Appia. Da Porta San Sebastiano in poi, Via Appia è una scoperta continua per rivivere la storia dell' antica Roma: il Sepolcro degli Scipioni, le Chiese di San Giovanni, la piccola chiesa del Domine Quo Vadis. Sulla Via Appia Antica apparvero, per la prima volta, le pietre miliari, delle pietre piantate sul ciglio della strada che segnavano le distanze percorse delle vie romane.
