I Fori Imperiali sono un complesso monumentale unico al mondo. Costituiscono una serie di cinque piazze monumentali edificate nel corso di un secolo e mezzo (tra il 46 a.C. e il 113 d.C.) nel cuore della città di Roma da parte di Giulio Cesare e degli imperatori Augusto, Vespasiano, Nerva e Traiano. Alla fine del periodo repubblicano, l'antico Foro romano si rivelò insufficiente alle funzioni di centro amministrativo della città. Giulio Cesare, nel 46 a.C., provvide per primo alla realizzazione di una nuova piazza, considerata all'inizio come un semplice ampliamento del Foro repubblicano. Al Foro di Cesare seguirono il Foro di Augusto, il Foro Transitorio o di Nerva (costruito da Domiziano e inaugurato da Nerva) e il Foro di Traiano, certamente il più grandioso e ultimo in ordine di tempo, realizzato per celebrare la vittoria dell'imperatore sui Daci, sconfitti in due durissime campagne militari. Lo straordinario bottino di guerra arricchì enormemente l'Impero e fu utilizzato proprio per costruire il Foro, inaugurato nel 112 d.C. Il Foro di Traiano è uno dei tanti capolavori dell'ingegneria romana, e i suoi ambienti erano probabilmente utilizzati come uffici e archivi collegati alle attività amministrative e giudiziarie che si svolgevano nei Fori Imperiali. Al centro della piazza era stata innalzata la Colonna Traiana a celebrare i fasti dell'imperatore. (da Turismo Roma).
