Le balene grigie (Eschrichtius robustus) arrivano nella Laguna di San Ignacio (Baja california) ogni anno (circa15 mila esemplari), in piccoli gruppi dal gelido Mare di Bering, dopo un viaggio di 9000-11.000 km (una delle più lunghe migrazioni compiuta da un mammifero). Partono dall'Alaska a ottobre, quando il ghiaccio le spinge a sud. Viaggiano notte e giorno, percorrendo 120 km al giorno a una velocità media di 8 km orari. Entro inizio gennaio, la maggior parte si trova tra Monterey (California, Usa) e Los Cabos (Baja California) e spesso sono visibili dalla riva. Arrivano quindi nella laguna di San Ignacio che è un santuario per le balene grigie e fa parte della Riserva della Biosfera di Vizcaino (creata nel 1988 al centro della penisola su 55.555 kmq),dichiarato patrimonio UNESCO. Un ecosistema - nel quale i giganti del mare danno alla luce i loro piccoli e dove convivono con delfini, tartarughe, leoni marini e con gli uccelli marini migratori che vivono tra foreste di mangrovie. In questo ambiente tutelato, gli studiosi dell'iniziativa non profit Laguna San Ignacio Ecosystem Science Program, monitorano e studiano nascite e comportamenti delle balene grigie che ad aprile-maggio riprendono il viaggio di ritorno verso l'Alaska.
