Il Palacio National de La Pena è uno dei palazzi in stile romanico più pregevoli al mondo e rappresenta una delle principali attrazioni turistiche del Portogallo. Sorge sulla cima di una collina, alle spalle della città di Sintra, a circa 500 mt. di altezza, circondato da terreni boscosi ricchi di sentieri nascosti, decorazioni mistiche e splendidi punti panoramici. Presenta splendide terrazze dipinte in colori vivaci, bastioni, decorative statue a tema mitologico, il tutto in netto contrasto con la vegetazione lussureggiante dei boschi del Parque de Pena. Gli interni del Palazzo sono ricchi di fascino e sono stati restaurati attenendosi all' arredamento ed alle decorazioni del 1910, quando la nobiltà portoghese si rifugiò in Brasile per sfuggire alla rivoluzione da cui sarebbe poi nata la Prima Repubblica Portoghese..
