Una foto scattata lo scorso giugno, l'estate era appena arrivata e i macaoni erano in piena attività, la metamorfosi è una delle fasi più belle dal punto di vista naturalistico. Il bruco smette di mangiare e va alla ricerca di un supporto su cui costruire la crisalide, dopo averlo trovato, tesse un reticolo con filamenti di seta sotto il suo corpo e una cintura per sostenere la testa. I filamenti di seta sono molto resistenti e permettono alla crisalide di restare ferma per tutto il periodo della metamorfosi. Alla fine con molti sforzi il bruco esegue la sua ultima muta, con delle forti contrazioni si libera della sua pelle, facendo uscire al suo posto la crisalide, che può essere verde, se fatta d'estate, o marrone se fatta d'autunno, in quest'ultimo caso la metamorfosi durerà tutti i mesi invernali e la farfalla nascerà la primavera successiva. Nelle ore precedenti alla nascita la crisalide diventa trasparente, lasciando intravedere gli occhi e il colore delle ali della farfalla
