Ogni Induista, almeno una volta nella sua vita, deve essersi recato a Varanasi e qui deve immergersi nel sacro fiume Gange almeno da 5 diversi ghats. Ogni mattina all'alba, gli Indù iniziano a compiere dai ghats le proprie abluzioni. Secondo l'induismo l'unico posto della terra in cui gli dei permettono agli uomini di sfuggire al samsara, cioè all'eterno ciclo di morte e rinascita, è la riva occidentale del Gange a Varanasi, perciò nel corso dei secoli milioni e milioni di induisti sono venuti a morire qui. Nel fiume proliferano batteri, virus e parassiti che sono all'origine di colera, epatiti, patologie gastrointestinali e parassitosi che ogni anno colpiscono e, a spesso uccidono, bambini ed adulti che si cibano dei prodotti agroalimentari irrigati con le medesime acque. Oggi il Gange è il fiume più inquinato del subcontinente ed è tra i 10 fiumi più inquinati al mondo.
