Il lago Onega nell'isola di Kiji, Situato in Carelia, regione russa che confina con la Finlandia, con una superficie di circa 9610 km², il lago Onega ha una vasta rete di canali che lo mettono in comunicazione con vari bacini sia marini che lacustri, tra cui il mar Bianco e il mar Baltico passando per il lago Ladoga ed il lago Vygozero. L'Onega sorge ad un'altitudine di 33 metri s.l.m. ed è profondo in media 30 metri ed al massimo 127 metri; ha una forma piuttosto stretta ed allungata, con l'estremità settentrionale che dista ben 230 chilometri in linea d'aria da quella meridionale. Questa regione è spesso spazzata da forti venti, che generano nel lago delle onde alte anche fino a 5 metri; vista la latitudine, le acque vicino alla costa iniziano a ghiacciare già verso fine Novembre, col disgelo che si completa in Maggio. Nel lago sono presenti ben 1.650 fra isolotti ed isole più grandi, fra cui l'isola Kizi, uno dei luoghi più visitati della Russia europea, grazie alle numerose chiesette ortodosse in legno e case tipiche della zona costruite fra XV e XX secolo d.C., per cui l'UNESCO l'ha dichiarata Patrimonio dell'Umanità nel 1990.
