Il castello di Miramare risale alla metà dell'Ottocento ed è stato costruito per volontà dell'arciduca Ferdinando Massimiliano d'Asburgo per abitarvi assieme alla consorte Carlotta del Belgio. Il nome deriva dallo spagnolo "mirar el mar", visto che l'arciduca, visitando il promontorio dove è stato poi costruito, fu ispirato dal ricordo di castelli spagnoli sulle coste dell'Oceano Atlantico. All'interno del castello, ora adibito a museo, si possono ammirare le stanze di Massimiliano d'Asbugo e consorte, le camere per gli ospiti con gli arredi originali (ornamenti, mobili e oggetti) risalenti alla metà del XIX secolo e la sala del trono recentemente restaurata. Una parte dell'edifiicio ospita anche le stanze in cui abitò il Duca Amedeo d'Aosta per circa 7 anni e che modificò alcune stanze con arredi dell'epoca (1930) in stile razionalista e sostituì le insegne Imperial-Regie con le croci sabaude.
