Cassinetta di Lugagnano è il borgo delle ville nobiliari milanesi, considerato che anticamente le nobili famiglie milanesi trascorrevano le estati lungo il Naviglio, costituendo così il grande patrimonio del borgo. Cassinetta e Lugagnano erano due centri urbani distinti, situati sulle rive opposte del Naviglio Grande e collegati da un ponte a schiena d'asino, costruito nel Seicento. Il nucleo più antico del borgo è quello di Lugagnano, situato sulla sponda destra del Naviglio, i cui insediamenti risalgono al periodo romano. Storia diversa per il nucleo situato sull'altra sponda del naviglio: Cassinetta. Il termine deriverebbe dalla Cassina Biraga, in riferimento al fondatore di questa borgata, Maffiolo Birago, nobile del Ducato di Milano, che qui nel 1435 fece edificare la più antica chiesa del luogo, dedicata alla Beata Vergine e a Sant'Antonio Abate. L'importanza e la funzionalità del naviglio in quei secoli, crearono la vera fortuna di questo luogo. Oltre alla funzione di trasporto delle merci, il naviglio permetteva inoltre, anche di uscire dalla città e di raggiungere località di villeggiatura e di caccia. Fu così che sempre più famiglie benestanti scoprirono la tranquillità e l'aria salubre di queste zone rurali, rendendo quindi il possedere una villa lungo i corsi d'acqua che circondavano Milano un fatto di moda. Sorsero quindi le ville di delizia: abitazioni signorili, circondate da parchi e giardini, circondati dal verde e dal lento scorrere delle acque del Naviglio Grande.
