Defendente Ferrari, è un pittore rinascimentale, nato a Chivasso. Defendente si formò nella bottega di Martino Spanzotti, elaborando ben presto una propria personale cifra stilistica intrisa di suggestioni nordiche, attenta alla ricchezza e alla preziosità della materia e dotata di spiccati valori emotivi e devozionali. Le sue opere, spesso grandi macchine d'altare, ancora conservate nelle chiese piemontesi o smontate e disperse in diversi musei italiani, d'Europa e d'America, documentano l'attività di una vivace bottega, con collaboratori in grado di rispondere alle richieste di una vasta committenza. L'Incoronazione della Vergine, è un'opera dell'ultima attività del pittore, databile intorno al 1530. È una grande tavola alta 180 cm con una composizione monumentale che raffigura la Trinità, con Dio Padre, la Colomba dello Spirito Santo, e Gesù che pone la corona sul capo della Vergine. Si tratta un'iconografia piuttosto rara, dove il ruolo di Maria come Regina del cielo non assume una posizione centrale ma tende piuttosto a sottolineare l'umiltà della Vergine in preghiera. La composizione, concepita per grandi blocchi di colore si sviluppa davanti allo sfondo dello spettacolare manto rosso del Dio padre, che domina maestoso.
