È un uccello stanziale, molto legato al proprio habitat: solo le popolazioni che vivono alle latitudini più settentrionali si riuniscono in stormi per scendere a svernare nelle regioni dove il clima è più mite. Il cigno reale è noto anche come "cigno muto" poiché vocalmente silenzioso rispetto ad altre specie di cigni; normalmente, infatti, emette solo versi gutturali poco udibili simili a gargarismi, raramente ad un volume percepibile a distanza dall'uomo.
