Il numero simbolico col quale la Basilica di San Marco si identifica è il cinque, e cinque sono le cupole mirabili che racchiudono fede e tesori al loro interno. La cupola centrale corrisponde, sempre secondo un'interpretazione simbolica, alla figura del Cristo storico, la cui discesa terrena divinizza il creato così come la cupola centrale divide in quattro triangoli perfetti il quadrato dato dalle quattro cupole esterne. Il mondo antico si identificava invece con il numero quattro, come i quattro punti cardinali: la figura che si racchiude in quattro punti è però deformabile, potendo da essa ottenere un rettangolo, un rombo, un trapezio.
