Duomo di Monza --- Dedicato a S. Giovanni Battista, è il monumento cittadino di maggior rilievo. L'altare maggiore, realizzato fra il 1793 e il 1798 da Andrea Appiani è in marmo e bronzo dorato con inserti di ametista e lapislazzuli. Il paliotto della mensa, al centro del presbiterio, è un capolavoro dell'oreficeria gotica lombarda: la decorazione racconta la Vita di S. Giovanni Battista e al centro è raffigurato il Battesimo di Cristo. Anche sulle pareti del coro sono riportare le Storie di S. Giovanni Battista. A sinistra dell'altare maggiore sorge la Cappella di Teodolinda (non fotografabile), le cui prestigiose pitture murali degli Zavattari, capolavoro del gotico internazionale della metà del XV secolo, rappresentano devozione e omaggio alla regina. La Cappella custodisce la Corona Ferrea, da secoli considerata simbolo e leggenda e l'opera di oreficeria tra le più importanti e significative di tutta la storia della cristianità. Un'antica tradizione vuole infatti che l'anello presente all'interno della Corona sia stato ricavato da uno dei chiodi della Croce di Cristo. Con la Corona Ferrea furono incoronati re ed imperatori, tra i quali Carlo Magno e Napoleone. (da turismo.monza.it) #Chiese
