L'Elleboro, comunemente chiamato Rosa di Natale, appartiene alla famiglia delle Ranuncolaceae e fiorisce tra Febbraio e Aprile nelle pinete o nelle faggete. In Italia si trova in tutte le regioni del nord tra i 300 ed i 1.000 m. slm, ma, più raramente, anche sino a 1.800 m. slm. Il nome del genere pare sia di origine greca da da "Hellèboros" fiume greco che attraversa la città di Antkyra, dove nell'antichità si utilizzava contro la pazzia una pianta locale dello stesso genere: l'Helleborus orientalis; i greci ritenevano infatti che l'Elleboro curasse la pazzia. Il nome specifico dal latino "niger="nero", per il colore scuro del rizoma. Esistono molte leggende sull'uso di questo fiore, si racconta che un pastore di nome Melampo, indovino e guaritore, avendo osservato che le proprie pecore, si purgavano mangiando l'elleboro, pensò di somministrare lo stesso alle figlie del re di Argo, Preto. La pazzia aveva colpito le giovani principesse, esse credevano di essere diventate vacche. Melampo le guarì, come ricompensa ottenne il titolo onorifico di “Purgatore”una parte del regno di Argo e la mano di una delle principesse. Gli antichi greci ricorrevano alla frase "aver bisogno dell'Elleboro " per indicare i folli, in quel tempo molti malati di mente si recavano ad Antycira, nel golfo di Corinto, che era località rinomata per la vegetazione ricca di Elleboro , luogo consigliato anche dal poeta latino Orazio. Racconta la leggenda che Eracle fosse stato guarito dalla pazzia proprio grazie a questa pianta. Pare che gli antichi filosofi ricorressero ai principi di questa pianta per raggiungere uno stato ipnotico, molto simile alla meditazione profonda. Un uso particolare ne fece Paracelso che usò le foglie dell'Elleboro per la preparazione di un "elisir di lunga vita". Gabriele D'Annunzio, ne “La figlia di Iorio” lo cita:”Vammi in cerca dell'Elleboro nero, che il senno renda a questa creatura”. Negli anni 50 e sino alla fine degli anni 60 del secolo scorso, nei paesi della bergamasca, dove l'elleboro è anche detto "fiùr del lüf ", in particolare della Val Cavallina, era nato un florido commercio dei fiori. I bambini li raccoglievano e li portavano in un punto di raccolta dove venivano selezionati e poi contati, una lira a fiore era la ricompensa. Venivano quindi inviati ai grossisti di fiori di Milano, ma soprattutto in Svizzera, dove la raccolta era vietata, ma non il commercio. I pochi soldi racimolati, in quegli anni di miseria, servivano per comprare i quaderni e quando il raccolto era abbondante: grande festa, ci scappava anche qualche caramella !!!
