Il 27 gennaio del 1945, i soldati sovietici dell'Armata Rossa liberarono il campo di sterminio nazista di Auschwitz, in Polonia, che era stato evacuato in precedenza. Quel giorno finì il più grande omicidio di massa della storia avvenuto in un unico luogo. Negli anni in cui il campo fu operativo vi furono rinchiusi 1,3 milioni di persone, e ne sopravvissero poche migliaia. Sui numeri non ci sono certezze, ma secondo i dati dell'US Holocaust Memorial Museum le SS tedesche uccisero almeno 960 mila ebrei, 74 mila polacchi, 21 mila rom, 15 mila prigionieri di guerra sovietici e 10 mila persone di altre nazionalità. La foto è stata scattata a Berlino presso la piazza del Memoriale per gli ebrei assassinati d'Europa.
