St. Matthäus-Kirche Poco lontano da Potsdamer Platz, la chiesa neoromanica di San Matteo è archittetonicamente un elemento del passato in una zona caratterizzata dalle linee ultramoderne della Neue Nationalgalerie (nuova galleria nazionale). La chiesa fu progettata da August Stüler e costruita nel 1846 per diventare la chiesa parrocchiale dell'elegante quartiere all'estremità meridionale del Tiergarten, che in quell'epoca si andava sviluppando velocemente. Evidente è il richiamo al romanico italiano. Alcuni elementi, come le finiture esterne a mattoni a due colori e le finestre strette e sormontate da archi, furono progettate dall'allievo di Schinkel, che prese il suo posto alla direzione della commissione edilizia prussiana. Negli anni Trenta, Albert Speer cercò senza successo di fare abbattere la chiesa per fare spazio al grandioso progetto chiamato “Germania”, che voleva trasformare Berlino nella sontuosa capitale del Reich. La chiesa, risparmiata dai bombardamenti della Seconda guerra mondiale che distrussero il resto del quartiere, fu restaurata nel 1960, con importanti rifacimenti nella parte interna. Oggi è nota anche per le sue mostre e per l'interessante programma di concerti nel periodo natalizio. (Dal sito di Berlino)
