La natività fu ricostruita per la prima volta nel 1223 da San Francesco d'Assisi, ritenuto il “fondatore” del presepe. Francesco rimase particolarmente colpito l'anno prima durante il Natale a Betlemme, e chiese a Papa Onorio III di poter ripetere le celebrazioni per il Natale successivo. A quei tempi le rappresentazioni sacre non potevano tenersi in chiesa. Il Papa così gli permise di celebrare una messa all'aperto a Greccio, in Umbria: i contadini del paese accorsero nella grotta, i frati con le fiaccole illuminavano il paesaggio notturno e all'interno della grotta fu inserita una mangiatoia riempita di paglia con accanto il bue e l'asinello: il primo presepe vivente. Il primo presepe con tutti i personaggi risale invece al 1283, per opera di Arnolfo di Cambio, scultore di otto statuine lignee che rappresentavano la natività e i Magi. Questo presepio è conservato nella Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore a Roma Tra il 1600 e il 1700, gli artisti napoletani introdussero nella scena della Natività personaggi immortalati nella vita di tutti i giorni, soprattutto durante il loro lavoro. La tradizione è ancora molto viva, come dimostrano le popolari bancarelle piene di personaggi lungo la via San Gregorio Armeno. Simolicamente il bue e l'asinello rappresentaneo il popolo ebreo e dei pagani. I Magi simboleggiano le tre età dell'uomo: gioventù, maturità e vecchiaia. Oppure le tre razze in cui, secondo il racconto biblico, si divide l'umanità: la semita, la giapetica, e la camita. I doni dei re Magi sono simboli della natura umana di Gesù e della sua regalità: la mirra per il suo essere uomo, l'incenso per la sua divinità, l'oro perché dono riservato ai re. I pastori rappresentano l'umanità da redimere e l'atteggiamento adorante di Maria e Giuseppe sottolinea la regalità del Nascituro.(da Origini e tradizione della rappresentazione della Natività) AUGURI A TUTTI VOI
