Fontana di Diana e Atteone. All rights reserved. Proseguendo ancora in salita nel crescendo di vivacità e maestosità della Via d'Acqua, sì giunge infine alla Cascata di Diana e Atteone, incastonata come un diamante nella vegetazione dei monti retrostanti ed evidentemente ispirata al culto di Diana, Dea della Caccia molto sentita nel territorio Casertano, da sempre ricco di boschi e selvaggina, dove era nota con l'appellativo di "Tifatina" e alla quale era consacrato un tempio sulle cui rovine sorse poi la Basilica di Sant'Angelo in Formis. La scena, opera di Paolo Persico, Pietro Solari e Angelo Brunelli, raffigura la Dea svestita e circondata da Ninfe mentre, dedita al suo bagno, scorge Atteone intento a spiare le sue nudità. La punizione per Atteone è severissima, raffigurato già nel mezzo di quella trasformazione che lo muterà in Cervo, mentre i suoi stessi cani gli si rivoltano contro, in procinto di sbranarlo. Un mito, quello di Atteone, proveniente dalla cultura Greca antica, secondo la quale, però, l'incauto cacciatore si era solo sventuratamente imbattuto nella Dea (Artemide per i Greci), il cui incantesimo non fu tanto punizione quanto espediente affinché mai trapelasse l'accaduto.Fra i due protagonisti della cruda tragedia scroscia fragorosa la grande Cascata, elemento di vita e purificazione, che con la sua imponenza sottolinea la maestosità della scena, mentre tutt'intorno, subito al di là dei prati antistanti, statue raffiguranti scene di caccia incorniciano la meraviglia di quest'ultima Fontana.
