Piazza Navona - rione Parione. La fontana, nota anche come fontana dei "calderari", dai commercianti che vendevano i recipienti di rame nella vicina piazza di S. Apollinare, si trova nell'estremità settentrionale di piazza Navona. Il disegno di questa fontana fu commissionato a Giacomo Della Porta nel 1574, ma il progetto originariamente prevedeva un semplice abbeveratoio che fu sostituito nella metà del seicento dall'attuale bacino, fatto costruire dal Bernini sul modello di quella della fontana del Moro situata all'opposta estremità della piazza. La decorazione della vasca, che doveva essere analoga a quella della sua gemella, con tritoni e mascheroni, non venne però realizzata. Solo dopo l'avvento di Roma Capitale, nel 1873 il Comune affidò la realizzazione del gruppo centrale con Nettuno in lotta con una piovra allo scultore Antonio Della Bitta e gli otto gruppi laterali con nereidi, cavalli marini, putti e delfini alternati a Gregorio Zappalà. Il dio Nettuno, al centro, è intento a infilzare una piovra su uno scoglio. In corrispondenza dei lati semicircolari si alternano animali acquatici e nereidi, ninfe del mare, a gruppi di putti con pesci che sputano acqua nel bacino sottostante. All rights reserved.
