PIAZZA SAN SILVESTRO Piazza di S.Silvestro prende il nome dalla chiesa omonima che vi si affaccia, sorta nell'VIII secolo sui resti della casa dei due fratelli pontefici Stefano II e Paolo I: per questo motivo la piazza, nell'alto Medioevo, era denominata, con un vocabolo mezzo greco e mezzo latino, “Catapauli“, ossia “presso (la casa) di Paolo”. La piazza sorge sull'area anticamente occupata dal “Tempio del Sole”, costruito da Aureliano nel 273 d.C. dopo la conquista di Palmira. L'edificio era formato da due grandi cortili porticati, collegati tra loro da una sala quadrangolare: il primo cortile aveva le pareti ornate da due ordini di nicchie inquadrate da semicolonne, mentre il secondo, di metri 130 x 90, aveva al centro un tempio rotondo con un giro di 16 colonne. Nei portici venivano custoditi i “vina fiscalia“, ossia il vino destinato alle distribuzioni gratuite. La chiesa di S.Silvestro in Capite originariamente fu dedicata ai santi Stefano e Silvestro ma in seguito rimase soltanto il secondo con l'aggiunto appellativo “in Capite” in quanto vi si conserva la testa di S.Giovanni Battista (precedentemente situata nella vicina chiesa di S.Giovannino.( Da Roma Segreta) -------------------------------------------------------------------- Come sempre un sentito e sincero grazie a tutti gli amici che lasceranno un segno del loro passaggio.
