Il cimbalom, detto anche salterio ungherese, è uno strumento musicale a corde battute. Tipico dell'Europa centro-orientale è diffuso soprattutto in Ungheria e in alcuni stati confinanti. Il più diffuso è il cimbalom da concerto: le corde vengono suonate percuotendole con bacchette ricoperte da cotone e il suono che si ottiene è una via di mezzo tra quello di un pianoforte e quello di una chitarra. Molti compositori moderni e contemporanei hanno utilizzato il cimbalom in numerose composizioni: Kodály, Bartók, Stravinskij, Debussy, Boulez, Eötvös, Kagel, Kurtág, Stockhausen. In Italia sono molti i compositori rimasti affascinati da questo strumento. Si ricordano qui in particolare Luca Antignani, Ivan Fedele, Luca Francesconi, Stefano Gervasoni e Alessandro Solbiati. Tra gli artisti internazionali che hanno utilizzato il cimbalom vi sono i The Alan Parsons Project nell'album Pyramid del 1978.
