Storia del Museo - Senza lo sforzo di un piccolo gruppo di appassionati, questo museo forse non sarebbe mai esistito. Il 1° maggio del 1911 l'antiquario Jules Sambon mette all'asta la sua prestigiosa collezione di oggetti legati al mondo del teatro. Un anno prima alcuni degli uomini più in vista di Milano si siedono a un tavolo nel Teatro alla Scala: fra questi il librettista e compositore Arrigo Boito, l'artista Lodovico Pogliaghi e il direttore della Pinacoteca di Brera Ettore Modigliani. Vogliono aprire un museo e la collezione Sambon potrebbe costituire il punto di partenza perfetto. Ma come raccogliere la considerevole somma di 450.000 lire richiesta dall'antiquario? Da una parte lo stato italiano offre il suo aiuto, dall'altra 50 privati cittadini organizzano una colletta e la somma viene raggiunta. Tutto sembra pronto ma Sambon rifiuta l'offerta: “una persona che non posso nominare, ma potentissima” vuole la sua collezione. Si scopre che questa misteriosa figura è il milionario J. P. Morgan, uno degli uomini più ricchi e potenti del mondo. Contro ogni pronostico, i nostri riescono a convincere il magnate ad abbandonare la sfida, forti del prestigio del Teatro alla Scala nel mondo.
