Piazza Santa Croce a Firenze deve il suo nome all'omonima basilica, una delle più grandi chiese francescane in Italia celebre oltre che per custodire gli affreschi di Giotto, le sculture di Benedetto da Maiano, Desiderio da Settignano e Canova, anche per essere il luogo di sepoltura di personalità del calibro di Galilei, Foscolo, Michelangelo e Machiavelli divenendo un simbolo della patria ancor prima dell'unità d'Italia. La piazza è delimitata da importanti palazzi che sul lato meridionale sono caratterizzati da piani sporgenti sorretti da sostegni detti sporti. Tra i più originali spicca il palazzo Cocchi-Serristori, opposto alla basilica e frutto di varie rielaborazioni nel corso dei secoli, considerato opera di Giuliano da Sangallo, architetto di fiducia di Lorenzo il Magnifico. Nel lato sud della piazza si trova il Palazzo dell'Antella, con una facciata vivace abbellita da numerose pitture, con disegni di figure allegoriche, putti, elementi vegetali, fiori e arabeschi che fanno da cornice al busto di Cosimo II de' Medici. Di particolare interesse, nel quarto riquadro da sinistra, la copia dell'Amorino dormiente del Caravaggio. Davanti alla Basilica, sulla sinistra, si trova il monumento dedicato a Dante Alighieri di Enrico Pazzi, eretto nel 1865, in occasione delle celebrazioni per il cinquecentenario dantesco. Davanti a palazzo Cocchi-Serristori nell'Ottocento è stata posta la fontana di Giuseppe Manetti, un rifacimento di epoca barocca. Essendo molto grande e di forma regolare, la piazza già dal Rinascimento era il luogo ideale per le gare popolari, come il Calcio storico fiorentino, che ancora oggi si gioca qui.
