L'ecosistema risicolo è costituito, nel suo complesso, oltre che dalla camera di risaia, anche da altri elementi, come canali, piccole aree umide, strade, filari di alberi, siepi, argini inerbiti, superfici incolte ecc., ciascuno dei quali può rappresentare un habitat idoneo per la sopravvivenza di numerosi organismi, anche non necessariamente legati all'ambiente acquatico. Sebbene in passato la presenza di ambienti marginali fosse piuttosto comune nel paesaggio risicolo, negli ultimi decenni l'intensificazione delle pratiche agricole ha determinato la scomparsa di gran parte di questi elementi. In particolare, le esigenze operative legate all'utilizzo di grandi macchinari hanno determinato un aumento dell'estensione dei campi a discapito delle superfici incolte circostanti, limitando anche la presenza di alberi e siepi lungo strade e canali perché ritenuti d'intralcio.
