Nella mitologia celtica Eostre era la divinità dell' Equinozio di Primavera e quindi del risveglio della natura dopo il riposo invernale. Secondo la leggenda Eostre incontrò in un bosco un uccello ferito che non poteva più raggiungere il nido e, per aiutarlo a trovarsi più facilmente un rifugio in terra, lo tramutò in lepre. La trasformazione non fu però completa e la lepre, per ringraziare la dea, cominciò a deporre (!!!) uova colorate. Da qui la tradizione e l' iconografia delle uova dipinte e del coniglietto pasquale. Dal nome Eostre o Ostara, letteralmente "Stella dell' Est", deriva Easter, cioè Pasqua in inglese.
