Quando mi capita (spesso) di ripensare alla mia Monopoli e ai luoghi legati alla mia infanzia, mi torna in mente questo pezzo di mare e questo terreno un po' accidentato, spesso pieno di barche in attesa di prendere il largo. Si chiama "Cala Portavecchia" perché dal lato opposto cominciano i vicoli, i vicoletti, le piazze e le piazzette del vecchio centro storico. Di quel vecchio centro storico, fatto di case bianche di calce, a un solo piano, con ampie terrazze vetrate, alcune con vista vicolo, altre con vista mare. All'epoca, nel mio passato remoto, queste erano considerate case di serie B, tutti aspiravano abitare nel nuovo centro con palazzi di parecchi piani, belle portinerie, ascensori e vaste sale all'interno degli appartamenti. Ricordo tanti pomeriggi trascorsi qui in compagnia dei miei compagni di scuola. Tutti seduti sulle barche, chiacchiere, risate e alle cinque in punto, tutti dal fornaio ad assicurarci il nostro pezzo caldo di focaccia pugliese farcita con la mortadella, una vera delizia anche per il palato più esigente. Gli anni sono passati, il fornaio non è più la botteguccia lunga e stretta di allora, ma un grande negozio a tre entrare, quelle case di serie B, sono diventate stupende, in quasi tutti i vicoli (è molto grande il vecchio centro storico) ci sono case-albergo, bed and breakfast e i locali a pian terreno, allora depositi e sgangherati garage, trattorie sempre affollate sia d'estate che d'inverno. Quello che vedete in foto, è l'unico posto rimasto pressocché uguale a quei lontani anni '60, e ci torno sempre volentieri tutte le volte che vado a casa. Passeggio ancora in quei vicoli, ma è cambiata la gente, inglesi, americani, giapponesi, tedeschi insieme a turisti italiani. Gli antichi abitanti hanno realizzato il sogno di andare ad abitare nelle case "nuove", ma forse si rendono conto che erano fortunati quando dal mattino alla sera sentivano il profumo del mare, e lo sciacquio dell'acqua fra gli scogli.
