Piazza del Campo è la piazza principale di Siena. Unica per la sua particolare e originalissima forma a conchiglia, è rinomata in tutto il mondo per la sua bellezza e integrità architettonica, nonché per essere il luogo in cui due volte l'anno si svolge il Palio di Siena. Per un'antica convenzione, la piazza e il Palazzo Pubblico non appartengono ad alcuna contrada Lo spazio che sarebbe diventato la piazza attuale era, alle origini di Siena, un terreno bonificato per consentire il deflusso delle acque piovane, come testata semicircolare della valle di Montone.
