L'Arco onorario dedicato all'imperatore Augusto è il monumento simbolo della città di Aosta (Augusta Praetoria). L'Arco, che si caratterizza per la sua severa imponenza, tipica dell'architettura del tardo periodo repubblicano, è a un solo fornice a tutto sesto, largo metri 8,29, come la strada che lo attraversava. Nel medioevo l'Arco era denominato “Saint-Vout” da una immagine del Salvatore che vi era stata collocata e sostituita in seguito col Crocifisso che si intravede nella foto. Nel 1716 il “Conseil des Commis” decise di preservare il monumento dalle infiltrazioni d'acqua ricoprendolo con un tetto d'ardesia. Come si può notare dalla foto, oggi l'Arco è talmente avviluppato dal tessuto urbano circostante che è praticamente impossibile fotografarlo senza elementi di disturbo. Per cui, ho pensato che un modo per rappresentarlo in modo “digeribile” è di far notare quanto più possibile tali elementi, così da evidenziare il contrasto tra nuovo e antico, come da titolo.
