Il Palazzo del Lloyd Triestino, in cui ha attualmente sede la Presidenza della Giunta regionale, fu costruito tra il 1880 e il 1883 per volontà dell'allora Lloyd Austro - Ungarico di Navigazione a Vapore. Il monumentale ed elegante palazzo, ispirato al rinascimento italiano, venne progettato dall'architetto Heinrich von Ferstel (Vienna1828 - 1883), uno dei massimi esponenti dell'eclettismo. La prima pietra venne posta solennemente alla presenza delle autorità il 6 dicembre del 1880, nel giorno della Festa di San Nicolò, patrono dei naviganti. I lavori si conclusero dopo tre anni. Nella primavera-estate del 1883 gli uffici del Lloyd vennero trasferiti nella nuova sede.
