Palazzo Reale nasce come grande dimora patrizia edificata dai Balbi – che lo costruirono tra il 1643 ed il 1650 – e dai Durazzo – che lo ampliarono tra la fine del Seicento e l'inizio del secolo successivo. Diventa Palazzo Reale nel 1824 quando viene acquistato dai Savoia. Il palazzo è uno dei più vasti complessi architettonici sei-settecenteschi a Genova con saloni di rappresentanza completi di affreschi, stucchi, dipinti, sculture, arredi e suppellettili appartenuti alle famiglie nobili e reali che lo abitarono. Le volte dei salotti e delle gallerie sono affrescate da alcuni dei nomi più importanti della decorazione barocca e rococò. Tra gli oltre cento dipinti esposti nelle sale si trovano opere dei migliori artisti genovesi del Seicento insieme a capolavori di Anton Van Dyck, Tintoretto, Guercino, Luca Giordano, Ferdinand Voet e dei Bassano. Le radici di Palazzo Reale affondano nel Seicento e fu voluto dalla famiglia aristocratica dei Balbi. Il 4 febbraio 1643 Stefano Balbi, abile finanziere, presentò il progetto per l'imponente fabbrica che sarebbe sorta di fronte alla chiesa di San Carlo e affidò i lavori agli architetti Pier Francesco Cantone, Michele Moncino e Giovanni Angelo Falcone. L'impianto secentesco della costruzione era allora limitato all'attuale corpo centrale e per la decorazione delle sale furono chiamati alcuni degli artisti più apprezzati sulla scena genovese come Giovan Battista Carlone e Valerio Castello, ma anche i bolognesi Angelo Michele Colonna e Agostino Mitelli. Il palazzo cambiò di proprietà nel 1679, quando Eugenio Durazzo lo acquistò. Il nuovo proprietario oltre a ridecorare la maggior parte delle sale diede il via a nuovi lavori edilizi: la costruzione dell'ala orientale, la decorazione della lunga facciata su Strada Balbi e la ricostruzione del Teatro del Falcone. Nella prima metà del Settecento il palazzo assunse un'articolazione tutta scenografica, con la costruzione dei due corpi scala, del grande terrazzo a U e dell'ampliamento del cortile d'onore. Risale a questa fase la Galleria degli Specchi, per la quale vennero presi come modelli d'esempio le gallerie dei Palazzi Colonna e Doria Pamphilj a Roma e la Galerie de Glaces, Versailles. All'inizio dell'Ottocento i Durazzo, afflitti da una crisi economica, misero in vendita il palazzo. Il primo a interessarsene fu Napoleone Bonaparte, ma alla fine ad aggiudicarsi la dimora nel 1824 fu il re di Sardegna Vittorio Emanuele I. Furono subito previsti importanti lavori di restauro e gli appartamenti furono adattati ai bisogni della famiglia reale nuovo uso. Così in quei decenni fu costruito un passaggio coperto che univa la reggia su via Prè e alla Regia Darsena e vennero allestite la Sala del Trono, la Sala della Udienze, il Salone da Ballo e un appartamento nobile al primo piano. Nel secondo piano nobile nell'ala di levante furono allestiti gli appartamenti del Re e della Regina, mentre l'ala di ponente fu destinata ad appartamento per il secondogenito di re Carlo Alberto, Ferdinando Duca di Genova. I Savoia commissionarono le decorazioni ai più rispettati professori della locale Accademia Ligustica e nel 1821 Carlo Felice aveva acquistato un importante raccolta di dipinti per la quadreria, ormai scarna a causa dalle alienazioni volute dagli ultimi eredi Durazzo in epoca di crisi e dai trasferimenti di opere a Torino ordinati sia da Carlo Felice che da Carlo Alberto. Palazzo Reale cambiò proprietario per l'ultima volta nel 1919, quando Vittorio Emanuele III lo cedette allo Stato Italiano.
