Tra le numerose chiese di Milano, di cui molte collocate tra via Torino e zone limitrofe, il Civico Tempio di San Sebastiano è uno dei pochi esempi di luoghi di culto religioso a pianta centrale. La prima pietra venne posta nel 1577, come ex voto per la fine della peste su progetto di Pellegrino Tibaldi, al quale Carlo Borromeo affidò il compito. Il tempio venne edificato su un luogo che già in precedenza aveva ospitato una chiesa dedicata a san Tranquillino. Nel Trecento, quando passò alla famiglia Pusterla, il tempio venne dedicato a San Sebastiano. Tibaldi seguì il progetto fino al 1586 circa quando si spostò in Spagna e al suo posto si susseguirono diversi architetti ,tra cui Giuseppe Meda e Fabio Mangone. L'edificio venne completato nei primi anni del Seicento. Per realizzare il progetto il Tibaldi dovette tenere conto del ridotto spazio dell'area e così realizzò una struttura cilindrica come per le antiche chiese paleocristiane. Quando Fabio Mangone nel seicento completò il nuovo presbiterio alterò il progetto del Tibaldi. Internamente gli affreschi che adornano la cupola sono di Agostino Comerio sul tema del “Mistero della Redenzione” e completati poi da Lazzaro Pasini. La struttura è arricchita anche da un organo a canne dei primi anni del '900. Inoltre, sotto la cappella della Pietà, è collocato un sarcofago con la salma di un soldato ignoto deceduto in un campo di concentramento come simbolo di commemorazione della Seconda Guerra Mondiale.
