con Fujifilm XF 1.4x TC WR, 1/280 f/8.0, ISO 200, hand held.

Farfalla comune e diffusa, di medie dimensioni, caratterizzata da una livrea arancione con chiazze e bande brune con apertura alare di 36 - 47 mm. Le ali anteriori mostrano un grosso ocello apicale con punto bianco centrale (pupillata), le posteriori quattro ocelli postdiscali, anch'essi con punto bianco centrale. Le parti inferiori delle ali anteriori ripetono gli stessi motivi della pagina superiore, mentre, posteriormente, evidenziano una trama di disegni confusi tra i quali si individua una delicata serie di ocelli cerchiati di bruno. Il dimorfismo è caratterizato dalla presenza di una grande banda scura sull'ala anteriore del maschio (fascia androconiale). Trivoltolina con schiuse precoci anche a febbraio sino ad ottobre inoltrato nel nord'Italia, fino a novembre nel sud, sverna come larva. Predilige luoghi aridi, sassosi e assolati (strade campestri, margini di bosco, siepi e campagne coltivate), la si incontra dal piano basale a quello alpino. L'uovo è di colore verde pallido e con un tenue reticolato, di forma quasi sferica ma tendezialmente più largo che alto. Il bruco, ha vita notturna ed è di colore verde bluastro, con linee longitudinali biancastre nonchè con una puntinatura sempre dello stesso colore. Dalle macchie più grosse sorgono delle protuberanze che alla base sono di colore arancio slavato, e dalla cui cima emergono delle setole grigiastre. Pianta ospite: diverse Graminaceae come erba mazzolina (Dactilis glomerata), fienarola (Poa pratensis), orzo selvatico (Hordeum spp.) ecc.
