A Vigevano difronte alla Chiesa di San Francesco si trova questa bellissima fontana che celebra l'amore per il frate di Assisi per gli animali. San Francesco d'Assisi, patrono d'Italia e 'fratello' degli animali. Figlio di un mercante appartenente alla piccola nobiltà cittadina, Francesco dopo la chiamata divina, abbandona la sua vita adagiata per iniziarne una fatta di penitenza e solitudine in totale povertà. Filo conduttore della sua esistenza è stato l'amore per la natura declinato in tutte le sue forme, non a caso San Francesco chiamava fratello il Sole e sorella la Luna,per lui tutti gli animali meritavano rispetto e il suo Cantico delle creatureinizia proprio con una lode: Laudato sie, mi Signore cum tucte le Tue creature. In tutti i suoi racconti, nelle sue preghiere sono presenti gli animali come pesci, agnelli e soprattutto uccelli. Ma sicuramente, la leggenda più conosciuta è quella legata al lupo che terrorizzava la città di Gubbio.
