#FioriBlu Nigella damascena L. I nomi popolari della nigella si sprecano: oltre che damigella, anche fanciullaccia, strega, scapigliata, occhio di pavone, barba di frate, lampioncini della Madonna. Ciò significa che le sue foglioline che le danno quell'aria veramente un po' scapigliata o l'involucro a palloncino dei suoi semi hanno sempre colpito la fantasia delle persone che la incontravano nei campi. Il nome Nigella deriva dal latino “nigrum” (nero) poiché i suoi piccoli semi sono neri come il carbone. Pare che il termine damascena derivi proprio da Damasco: in tempi molto lontani, si effettuavano frequenti importazioni di grano dall'Asia Minore. La nigella era (e lo è ancora in qualche rara circostanza) una frequente pianta infestante dei campi di grano e quindi i suoi semi erano presenti tra i chicchi, che venivano così “seminati” anche nei nostri campi. Cresce in tutta Italia dal mare alle prime colline, negli oliveti e nei vigneti, nei prati assolati, calcarei, asciutti, ai bordi delle strade. Si tratta di una pianta erbacea annuale con radice a fittone, da cui parte un unico stelo alto fino a 40 cm: talvolta può essere ramificato nella parte alta. Le foglie sono alterne, variamente incise: da pennate o bipennate o settate in sottilissime lacinie lineari. Le foglie inferiori hanno un picciolo con una guaina che avvolge il fusto, mentre quelle superiori sono sessili. I fiori sono solitari all'apice del fusto, formati da 5 petali bianco azzurrini e con una corona di foglie bratteiformi. Il frutto è inconfondibile: è un palloncino secco, ovale o sferico largo fino a 3 cm, sormontato da brattee filiformi che con il tempo si rompono e cadono. FONTE: http://www.parcobotanico.it/
