Il Lago di Mergozzo è un piccolo e limpidissimo specchio d'acqua che si trova nel Verbano Cusio Ossola, in Piemonte, a pochissimi chilometri dal Golfo Borromeo e quindi da Verbania e Baveno. Sul piccolo lago si affaccia la piccola cittadina che dà nome al Lago: Mergozzo. Un tempo il Lago di Mergozzo non era che il lembo più occidentale del Lago Maggiore, il cosidetto Sinus Mergotianus. Il Lago Maggiore era un tempo più elevato e più esteso rispetto al presente, ed ancora oggi è facile scorgere nell'entroterra di Mergozzo i segni indubbi della presenza di acque. In secoli remoti le continue alluvioni del fiume Toce crearono uno sbarramento deltizio, l'attuale piana di Fondotoce, cioè quel lembo di terra che divide i due laghi. Il lago di Mergozzo è ancora collegato al Maggiore tramite un canale lungo 2,7 km, non navigabile a causa del dislivello: attualmente il lago di Mergozzo si trova ad un altitudine di ca. 2 metri più in alto del Maggiore. Il Lago e le sue purissime acque sono una delle mete preferite degli appassionati di sport acquatici come la canoa, il kayaking, il windsurf. Il Lago, come la gran parte delle acque della Val d'Ossola, è protetto e gestito dalla Provincia del Verbano-Cusio-Ossola. Quanto alla pesca gestione e controllo competono alla FIPSAS (Federazione italiana pesca sportiva ed attività subacquee) della Provincia del VCO. Un vero paradiso per coloro che praticano la pesca sportiva, pur regolamentata, e soprattutto dagli amanti del Carpfishing. Il Lago di Mergozzo è sicuramente un magnifico posto per rilassarsi e godere in pace delle bellezze naturali presenti nelle vicinanze. (da Lago Maggiore.net).
