Il rifugio del tempo perduto L'Antica Birreria Peroni, unico locale storico del suo genere nella capitale, si può ben dire che viva in odore di santità. L'accoglie via di S. Marcello che, al passante disattento e frettoloso, può sembrare una delle tante stradine di Roma. I suoi sanpietrini, invece, raccontano storie di martirio e di miracoli. Destinata, in origine, a Catabulum, la stazione delle poste romane dove venivano ricoverati i cavalli e le vetture dei corrieri postalie dove fu sottomesso ai lavori più degradanti il pontefice S. Marcello, assunse nel tempo una sua sacralità. Sulle rovine delle scuderie venne eretta una chiesa dedicata al Santo Pontefice Martire con la facciata al lato opposto dell'attuale e dalla quale la via prende il nome. Nel 1519 un incendio distrusse la chiesa che fu riedificata con la facciata in via del Corso: sorse, inoltre, sul demolito Palazzo Costa, la Galleria S. Marcello che univa la strada a via del Corso. Nella galleria, ora di proprietà della banca di Roma e non più transitabile, si può ammirare l'antica fonte battesimale della chiesa preesistente. Nel 1669, interessò la via: l'immagine della Vergine, che si trovava raffigurata in un'edicola, mosse gli occhi. Allora venne edificato dalla famiglia della marchesa Lavarelli Papazzurri il più piccolo santuario mariano esistente, il quale è attualmente conosciuto come la Madonna dell'Archetto. Nel 1796 si verificò nuovamente lo stesso miracolo. Su queste fondamenta di santità nasceva, ai primi del novecente, un deposito di birra e ghiaccio che in seguito avrebbe dato origine all'attuale “Antica Birreria Peroni”. La trasformazione iniziò negli anni Venti: il pittore Albani affrescò le sale, compresa l'ultima, ove allora ancora esistevano le corde per suonare le campane dell'adiacente chiesa. Le citazioni che vi si possono leggere furono opera del conte Salviucci, membro dell'accademia delle Scienze del Vaticano. Un fatto inspiegabile avenne durante l'affrescatura delle pareti: sul piccolo arco che separa la sala delle campane dalle altre, apparve un misterioso simbolo che, nonostante l'impegno del pittore, riaffiorava sempre. Un fatto che in quel tempo fece parlare di esoterismo indecifrabile. In ogni caso un intervento murario radicale risolse l'inconveniente. L'Antica Birreria Peroni stava iniziando il suo lungo percorso di attività. Nell'attuale ingresso vennero posti dei vasconi in cemento per contenere le bottiglie di birra che venivano coperte di ghiaccio tritato finissimo e da un grande telo per non far disperdere il freddo. Agli assidui avventori veniva dato, in segno di gentile accortezza, un boccale numerato ove poter gustare la birra in modo personalizzato ed esclusivo. Il ghiaccio e la birra, consegnati con un carrettino in tutta la zona circostante, avevano un'unica provenienza: l'Antica Birreria Peroni. Il suono degli zoccoli dei cavalli dei corrieri postali si era ormai perso nel tempo. Ora in via S. Marcello risuonava l'incedere fragoroso dei possenti cavalli ungheresi che trasportavano i barili, colmi della bionda bevanda, che avrebe dato il via alla nascita della famosa birra “alla spina”. Ora siamo in un presente formatosi all'ombra delle solide radici della tradizione. Il viaggio nella storia dell'Antica Birreria Peroni è terminato.
