COSTRETTA A RIFILARE LO SCATTO IN QUESTA MANIERA PER LA PRESENZA DI DIVERSI ELEMENTI DI DISTURBO ALL'INTERNO DEL FOTOGRAMMA. SALUTI MARILU' La Cripta costituisce il primo nucleo nella costruzione del duomo. Già nel Marzo 1081, alla presenza di Roberto il Guiscardo e dell'Arcivescovo Alfano I, venivano deposte le reliquie di san Matteo, dei santi martiri e di altri santi come si evince dalle diverse lapidi ivi collocate, le quali dimostrano che a quella data la struttura era già completa. La cripta, come la si vede oggi,corrisponde ai lavori eseguiti agli inizi del Seicento ad opera degli architetti Domenico Fontana e del figlio Giulio Cesare, i quali hanno sfruttato la centralità del sepolcro di san Matteo, il luogo più sacro di tutta la chiesa ed intorno al quale ruotano tutti gli altri spazi. L'altare in marmi policromi è arricchito da entrambi i lati da un elegante baldacchino. Ad ornamento dell'altare il Collegio Medico Salernitano donò nel 1666 e nel 1673 due coppie di pregevoli candelabri in ottone, fatti realizzare da Francesco Rosso. Negli scorsi anni '60 la struttura dell'altare fu totalmente trasformata. Sul lato settentrionale fu eretto un nuovo altare. Qui attraverso una piccola apertura è possibile vedere il sepolcro di S.Matteo. Al centro del doppio baldacchino dell'altare sono collocate due statue gemelle di S. Matteo realizzate da Michelangelo Naccherino nel 1606. Il Santo è raffigurato mentre scrive il Vangelo con un libro poggiato sul ginocchio sinistro e una penna sulla mano destra. Al suo fianco un angelo gli porge un calamaio. All rights reserved.
