E' un simpatico turdide migratore abbastanza comune, tuttavia in alcune circostanze trova le condizioni di vita favorevoli e diventa stanziale. Frequenta preferibilmente le aree boscose di medio-alta montagna, ma si può incontrare anche in pianura. E' conosciuto per il suo canto primaverile con scale musicali sublimi che si diffondono di primo mattino e verso sera. Ma la caratteristica curiosa che non tutti conoscono, sta nel fatto che i due sessi non presentano nessun dimorfismo sessuale, ovvero non è possibile distinguere il maschio dalla femmina dal piumaggio o dalla dimensione, ma solo dal canto del maschio in primavera.
