La Giornata internazionale per l'eliminazione della violenza contro le donne è una ricorrenza istituita dall'Assemblea generale delle Nazioni Unite, tramite la risoluzione numero 54/134 del 17 dicembre 1999. L'Assemblea generale delle Nazioni Unite ha designato il 25 novembre come data della ricorrenza e ha invitato i governi, le organizzazioni internazionali e le ONG a organizzare attività volte a sensibilizzare l'opinione pubblica in quel giorno. L'Assemblea Generale dell'ONU ha ufficializzato una data che fu scelta da un gruppo di donne attiviste, riunitesi nell'Incontro Femminista Latinoamericano e dei Caraibi, tenutosi a Bogotà nel 1981. Questa data fu scelta in ricordo del brutale assassinio nel 1960 delle tre sorelle Mirabal considerate esempio di donne rivoluzionarie per l'impegno con cui tentarono di contrastare il regime di Rafael Leónidas Trujillo (1930-1961), il dittatore che tenne la Repubblica Dominicana nell'arretratezza e nel caos per oltre 30 anni. Il 25 novembre 1960, infatti, le sorelle Mirabal, mentre si recavano a far visita ai loro mariti in prigione, furono bloccate sulla strada da agenti del Servizio di informazione militare. Condotte in un luogo nascosto nelle vicinanze furono torturate, massacrate a colpi di bastone e strangolate, per poi essere gettate in un precipizio, a bordo della loro auto, per simulare un incidente. In Italia solo dal 2005 alcuni centri antiviolenza e Case delle donne hanno iniziato a celebrare questa giornata. Ma negli ultimi anni anche istituzioni e vari enti come Amnesty International celebrano questa giornata attraverso iniziative politiche e culturali. Nel 2007 100.000 donne (40.000 secondo la questura) hanno manifestato a Roma "Contro la violenza sulle donne", senza alcun patrocinio politico. È stata la prima manifestazione su questo argomento che ha ricevuto una forte attenzione mediatica, anche per le contestazioni che si sono verificate a danno di alcuni ministri e di due deputate. Nel 2016, il 26 novembre, il movimento delle donne, organizzato intorno alla sigla Non una di meno scende sulle strade di Roma in una imponente manifestazione contro la violenza alle donne con la presenza di 200.000 donne. Dal 2006 la Casa delle donne per non subire violenza di Bologna promuove annualmente il Festival "La violenza illustrata", unico festival nel panorama italiano interamente dedicato alla Giornata mondiale contro la violenza sulle donne. Ormai centinaia di iniziative in tutta Italia vengono organizzate in occasione del 25 novembre per dire no alla violenza di genere in tutte le sue forme. - (fonte Wikipedia) - (Rod)
