Scatto eseguito dalla cima del Facciatone di Siena. Forse non tutti sanno che il Duomo di Siena poteva essere molto più grande e maestoso di quello che possiamo ammirare oggi. Era il 1339, il momento del massimo splendore della città toscana: forse per emulare la rivale Firenze, le autorità decisero che il transetto del Duomo in via di costruzione sarebbe stato allungato a dismisura per diventare il corpo centrale del Duomo Nuovo, che così avrebbe acquisito dimensioni straordinarie. Pensate: la chiesa di oggi sarebbe stata il transetto di quella nuova! Dopo nemmeno diciott'anni, vari crolli e una terribile epidemia di peste, si capì che l'impresa era folle e si abbandonarono i lavori, preferendo proseguire sul vecchio impianto (poi terminato nel 1370). Ma il prolungamento del transetto e la facciata del Duomo Nuovo erano già state costruite: e quella mura - oltre a basamenti per le colonne - furono lasciata a memoria della vicenda e rimangono, a lato del Duomo, ancora oggi. La facciata, in particolare, viene chiamata affettuosamente "il Facciatone".
